As I understood, you need to use a powered one if the drive is not a pendrive. Only that you have to turn it off at boot. Another option is to use a NAS drive and access it through the network. It says that it supports larger drives:

Well, we don't know which protocol is that other app using. Network shares use a microsoft protocol that has several versions and I only support one, the one that is supposed to be the most used / standard. I would check:
a) The network device must be in bridged mode (it seems to be).
b) SMB1/ CIFS must be enabled in openmediavault
c) Try always with "guest only" shares first
If it still not working, post the screenshots of your configuration
