MAME artwork (bezels, etc)

Postby Zilverone » Mon Jan 22, 2018 8:01 pm

I am wondering if there is an option to load artwork for MAME. I store my ROMs and artwork on a NAS and none of the artwork seems to want to load in RetroX. It works fine using another stand alone emulator. So I'm wondering if it is an option or if I do not have something set up properly.

Thanks!

Currently we don't support artwork for MAME.

But, it seems to be an interesting addition. Can you tell me more about it? Like, what type of artwork is available, and how the games look when using it?

Thanks

You find the artwork files usually same places that you can find ROMs at. They are in a zip file named the same as the ROM. These go into the artwork folder. The PC version of MAME automatically creates this folder alongside the ROM and Samples folders. The links below are screenshots of Asteroids, Space Invaders, and Discs of Tron with artwork I just made in the PC version of MAME. It made small versions of the full screens with the artwork. You can see that it adds art around the sides to simulate what you would see in a real arcade game around the screen. It also adds the background artwork you would see in the arcade. Space Invaders and Discs of Tron are good examples of background art. Otherwise you just have a black background. It really adds to the effect of the game.

The artwork can operate in two modes, set by Video Options - > View in the MAME options. Full will shrink the game's play field down so that all the artwork will show. I don't really like this mode because it makes the play field too small for my tastes. Cropped will keep the play field at the normal size and will crop the artwork as necessary. I could not get MAME to screen capture a copy of what it looks like in cropped so I took a photo of Tron with and without art on my laptop screen.
