Emulator for computer systems are harder to port and make them run reasonably fine with a gamepad because the games that run on them assume that you have a full keyboard. I don't have the sizes at hand but you can measure yourself thinking that the reference size of the screen is 1280x720

The code to save the state for MAME 2014 is not implemented in the original emulator.
The only version of MAME with save states is MAME 2013.

Not right. The uncompressed file is called frambu-1.1.img.
May be the uncompression software is doing something else with the name. Try renaming it and burn it into the SD
