Xbox 360 controllers not working within games

Hi all - I've just added a couple of Xbox 360 controllers to my Retrox setup on my Nvidia Shield. They connect through the official wireless connector, and work fine through the Android ecosystem and within menus in Retrox.

The issue I'm having is that they don't seem to be working once I load any games. I've tried a few games within a few emulators, and nothing works. The buttons have been mapped in the settings menu, currently as game pads 3 & 4. Should I move them to game pads 1 & 2 istead? Would that make any difference?

I was also unable to map R2 & L2 - is there any reason for this?

Can anyone let me know what I need to do to get them up and running?

Only the first controller for me works in retrox on my shield. If it is a two player game like House of the dead I am able to hit start on the second controller and the second player can join in. I think this is how it is by design.
